The second top 300 list of the 2011 season brings us closer to our preference list or "draft board", with half of the college season through and many of the high school seasons winding down.  This will be the last updated rankings before our final rankings, which will be released June 1-3.  DSS evaluators have seen the everyone in our top 100 either during summer showcases and tournaments, collegiate wood bat leagues, fall pro scout days, fall workouts and tournaments, or spring regular season, most in person and some via scouting video.  For prospects 101-300, our evaluators have seen the majority of players in person, and a good number otherwise on video, with a small portion of the list made up of players identified through statistical analysis and speaking with other evaluators.  We expect some tweaking over the next month, but this list gets us close to where we expect to be a month from now.  Thank you for your interest, and please do not hesitate to send us your thoughts using the comment box at the bottom of the page!

Articles/M300Fernandez.JPGPlayer spotlight: Jose Fernandez
Fernandez doesn't have the national hype machine working in his favor this spring, but evaluators familiar with his game have plenty of reason to pencil him high on their respective preference lists.  Owner of a sturdy workhorse frame, Fernandez could benefit from tightening his physique some and will have to focus on conditioning as he shifts to a pro life style.  That said, he went back-to-back starts in four days last October hitting 94-95 mph in the seventh inning, and showed almost no signs of tiring throughout his two complete game starts.  If things click, Fernandez is a solid mid-rotation starter with a chance to provide true front-end value off the strength of two potential plus offerings and two more potential average or better offerings.  He needs to steer clear of overthrowing in order to maintain his command throughout starts.  If he prefers the all out max effort approach, of course, he has the makings of a top tier closer with two plus power pitches.

Articles/M300Fisher.JPGPlayer spotlight: Derek Fisher
While Fisher lacks the immense ceiling of Starling, he is another legit potential five-tool talent.  While he shows plus to fringe-plus-plus foot speed right now, he projects to slow some as he finishes filling in his thick frame, and ultimately probably profiles best in right field, where he has plenty of arm.  His bat can play across the diamond, with a chance to provide average to plus production in the power department, as well as from a pure hit tool perspective.  His commitment to the University of Virginia is rumored to be strong, which could cause his ultimate slot to drop some on draft day.  From a pure grades perspective he's easily a 1st Round talent, and could work his way into the Mid-1st Round with a strong finish and solid workouts.

Articles/M300Mahtook.JPGPlayer spotlight: Mikie Mahtook
Entering the season Mahtook was viewed as a classic case of big tools yet to be refined.  He has made strides this spring both in the outfield and at the plate.  A right fielder last season at LSU and a left fielder with Team USA this summer, Mahtook has worked as a serviceable center fielder this spring, showing solid closing speed.  While his routes have improved, he can still be a little timid in his first step and will need to continue to work to on his defensive game in order to provide positive value up-the-middle at the next level.  The tools are, without a doubt, there for him to stick in center long term.  He has the raw strength to develop into above-average power, but still struggles some with his timing.  Even with his power outburst this spring, there remain questions as to how much work is needed to allow that pop to manifest at the next level -- particularly after an inconsistent summer with the USA Collegiate National Team.  Mahtook has taken a big step forward this spring, and has put himself in a position to come off the board in the first round to a team high on Mahtook's impressive spring.

Articles/M300Kukuc.JPGPlayer spotlight: Cody Kukuk
Kukuk’s big frame, projection and current stuff is an impressive package that should entice an organization to grab him early on Day 2, if not late on Day 1, of the Rule 4 Draft this June.  Already bumping low-90s velo with his fastball with more on the way, it’s the lefty’s secondaries that really make you stand up and take notice.  Kukoc shows an advanced feel for his change-up, coming with fade and drop, and two separate breaking balls -- each with potential to develop into above-average offerings.  The wildcard is just how much growth in his stuff will accompany the filling-in of his highly projectable body.  His quality arsenal, boasting four potential average or better Major League pitches, merges well with his body to help project a mid-rotation innings eater, and perhaps a bit more.

Articles/M300Gagnon.JPGPlayer spotlight: Andrew Gagnon
Gagnon has taken his success from the Cape last summer and carried it over to the spring.  His velocity remains consistently 90-92, bumping 93/94 mph, with his fastball, lively with armside action.  His strong build and easy mechanics should help him rack-up the innings at the next level, with a chance to reach mid-rotation upside off the quality of his fastball and developing breaking ball.  He can still get caught between a curve and a slider, sitting upper-70s with soft shape.  When he snaps off a good one, however, it flashes a tick above-average with solid bite.  Gagnon has also mixed-in a mid-80s cutter this spring, which has given him another weapon to help produce soft contact -- particularly against lefties.  While his ceiling is limited, the Dirtbags Friday night ace has the physicality, quality fastball and foundation for a full arsenal to garner early Day 2 selection.
